1. What do you do (detailed explanation)?

The personal protection system taught by the NUI Maynooth Self-Defence Club is based in Jiu-Jitsu and American Kenpo, supplemented by principles from Chinese and Filipino martial arts and European boxing methodology. The instructors teach a blending of realistic, "no-frills" techniques where the safety of our students, both inside and outside training, is paramount. Wasteful movements and unrealistic fine motor control-based joint manipulations are removed entirely in favour of gross motor function techniques and stress habituation drills, designed by law enforcement and military agencies to be useable across a range of combat stress levels. Our personal protection programme is fully modular, with Level 1 designed to be taught over eight concurrent ninety-minute classes. Each lesson builds on the knowledge gained in the previous lesson and gradually introduces students to the stresses associated with modern personal-protection situations such as muggings, street attacks, etc.

Jiu-Jitsu literally means the "art or science of softness", is a Japanese martial art consisting primarily of grappling techniques. Jiu-Jitsu evolved among the samurai of feudal Japan as a method for dispatching an armed and armored opponent in situations where the use of weapons was impractical or forbidden. Due to the difficulty of dispatching an armored opponent with striking techniques, the most efficient methods for neutralizing an enemy took the form of pins, joint locks, and throws. These techniques were developed around the principle of using an attacker's energy against him, rather than directly opposing it, and came to be known as Jiu-Jitsu (Source Wikipedia.org). Jiu-Jitsu's non-reliance on strength and physical mass, coupled with its ability to resolve conflict without seriously damaging an opponent make it ideal for the needs of the modern martial artist, where use of reasonable force is a constant underlying concern in any potential physical conflict. The control & restraint techniques learned by law enforcement, military, and security organisations around the world are based in contemporary Jiu-Jitsu. Sensei Tony Salveta is the NUI Maynooth Self-Defence Club Jiu-Jitsu instructor.

Ed Parker's American Kenpo or Kenpo Karate is a system of martial arts characterized by the use of quick moves in rapid-fire succession intended to overwhelm an opponent. It is largely marketed as a self-defence system, and is derived from traditional Southern Chinese kung fu and other martial arts found in the cultural melting pot of Hawaii. Parker introduced significant modifications in his art, including principles, theories, and concepts of motion as well as terminology, throughout his life. (Source Wikipedia.org) Kenpo offers an alternative learning environment to the more traditional Eastern martial arts due to its scientific approach and use of modern trerminology. Mr. Darryl Murray is the NUI Maynooth Self-Defence Club Kenpo instructor.

The regular Self-Defence Club class schedule is supplemented by regular seminars, workshops and cross-training sessions taught by guest instructors from a variety of martial arts backgrounds. This further contributes to the flexibility and versatility that has become the trademark of NUI Maynooth Self-Defence Club students.

The core aims of the NUIM Self-Defence club are:

A) To instill in our students the confidence and poise of a person aware of his or her physical, mental, and spiritual capabilities and limitations.
B) To provide an effective alternative to the combative mindset preached by other similar systems while not allowing the students' abilities to protect themselves to suffer.

2. What is Antonio Salveta's Background?

Self-proclaimed holder of the world's most impressive collection of Yellow belts, Tony was sent to kickboxing classes at the tender age of seven by two fretful parents concerned by his hyperactivity. He changed martial arts more often than Premiership Football teams change their strip until finally settling on studying Ju-Jitsu under Renshi Tom Hodgins and Sensei Peter Sheeran in the NUIM Self Defence and Drogheda Ju-Jitsu clubs, respectively, in 1999.

In addition to teaching the club he inherited from Renshi Hodgins in Maynooth, Tony continues to train regularly under Sensei Stephen Downes and Professor Jonathan McGeoghan. Tony recently graded for Black Belt (Jiu-Jitsu International) under Renshi Tom Hodgins, Professor Jonathan McGeoghan, and Sensei Stephen Downes, passing the grading with flying colours and impressing all present. In attendance at the grading also were Sensei Darryl Murray (3rd Dan Kenpo Karate), Sensei Darren Hayes (2nd Dan Kyu Nin Hokusi No Jutsu), and Master Daniel Rooney (Founder, Kyu Nin Hokusi No Jutsu).

3. What's Darryl Murray's Background?

Mr Darryl Murray began his training in the art of Kenpo Karate at the age of 6 in 1989 at The Loreto College Kenpo Karate School. He achieved the rank of Black Belt in December 2000 under the American Kenpo International Senior Council - President Tony Cogliandro, President of the Board of Directors Don Rodrigues, European Senior Council Directors Maurice Mahon, Shay Paget and Barney Coleman. The distinguished panel also consisted of AKI Senior Council members Mr. Alan Corrigan, Mr. Dermot O'Reilly, Ms Freda Roberts and Mr. Philip Curran.

He first competed internationally in Amsterdam in 1997 and at the time he was one of the youngest members on the team. From this experience he gained a greater understanding of how much could be achieved by hard work and training. As well as competing in Holland he has also competed at other tournaments abroad such as Jersey 1998, Plymouth 2000, and Boston 2003. Mr Murray is also a long standing member of The Loreto College Kenpo Karate Demonstration team.

While studying at NUI Maynooth he began cross-training with practitioners from other systems including Jiu-jitsu, Judo and other styles of Karate. From this he has developed a long standing relationship with the instructors and students of the Self Defence Club. He has also attended seminars with renowned martial artists such as Mr Alan Jacobs, Mr Larry Tatum, Mr Paul Dye, Mr Huk Planas and Mr Tony Cogliandro to name a few.

While in Holland in 2006 Mr. Murray was awarded the rank of 3rd Degree Black Belt. At Present he currently teaches and trains most nights in the week, and is proud to have begun teaching Kenpo in Maynooth.
