N.B. This thread is meant to be taken at face value, and no disrespect towards other styles or practitioners is implied or intended by me here.
Recently, two friends of mine attended a grading in another martial art, and it turns out that the instructor of that martial art saw fit to scrawl their names on the shoulder of their suits in fridge marker.
Now, while I don't think anyone could acuse me of excessive amounts of orthodoxy with regards presentation of self or other such things, I'll admit to having been disgusted by this.
My idea was that the two students should get the suits dry cleaned and send the bill to this sensei.
Basically, whadday'all think? Does your sensei have a right to deface your suit? If so, would I be within my rights to get each of my students to put an iron on transfer of my face onto their suits?

| No way, not right at all! Suits and presentation are a part of martial arts. My sensei would've flipped if we turned up to traing or to a grading or competition without impecable suits.

How much of a big deal is the state of your suits?
In all seriousness.

It's important. It's a sign of respect for your sensei and the poeple you're training with that you keep yourself and your suit presentable.

Right I see.
So then this particular Sensei was a tit who had no idea of what appears to me If I may call it Martial Art ettiquette.
Is that accurate?

Hell, I wouldn't be happy if someone wrote on any of my clothes, why should training clothes be any different?

was it the student's names, or the sensei's?
though either one is a bit overboard.
I don't do martial arts of any kind, but having names or something written on it, when the suit is white, I mean, if they wanted colours, or names, they could have had it from the beginning, but they haven't.
You can pick out those "white suits" because they are that.
WHITE.
not with marker on them...

Wow, I have so many questions into the specifics of this: were they participating in the grading? Did the instructor do this to all attendants? It sounds very odd.
White is often the colour of choice for uniforms as it symbolises purity; therefore to purposely deface a suit can be a major breech in MA ettiqette. I mean I have some stains in mine that Daz Ultra can't shift - but I didn't do it deliberately.
I also have to ask, as it was a different instructor in a different art, why did they let him? I mean, if it meant so much to them - they could have refused.

Yes it was a grading and yes he did it to everyone there, including one of his blackbelts.

I found myself quite disgusted at it. The suits are so expensive anyway, and I just thought it was a bit arrogant to presume to write on (and deface) someone's suit without giving them any choice in the matter.
I think a suit is your own, and without express permission, no one has a right to deface it. I know that on the mats you have to obey and respect your sensei, but I think that that is out of line, and shows up the sensei for having little respect for the property or boundaries of the students he/she teaches, regardless of what grade they are.

Most programmers confronted with JCL simply copy a working file (or card deck), changing the file names. It is reported that hackers at IBM itself sometimes sing "Who's the breeder of the crud that mangles you and me? don't encourage that.
I'd say they are white for a reason so don't write on them. Plus I agree with the points people said that you wouldn't want people to write on the rest of your clothes either

But my suits get dirty real fast and no matter how much washing they are slowly turning brown. eugh! Do you really want a mat full of your grimy face? (Not that there is anything wrong with that) *dreading me next training session already*

why the hell does that shock you so much? You japanese martial arts people who wear a belt`? Dya all know why you grade from white ti yellow to red etc.? Just because these are the color the sweat of the belt takes.
So much for being impeccable as a mark of respect.

Yes I do know that. Honestly it should go from white straight to brown. I dont sweat red, orange, green, blue or purple for that matter!
