I recently witnessed a GAA-head kick the living crap out of two supposed 'hard-men' martial artists who tried to start a fight with him. All their Karate Kid and Kung fu from the matrix (which I've sure they watched over and over to prefect thier moves) didn't do them one iota of good. Let's be serious here, martial arts does nothing but give a false sense of security to those who are too socially inept to protect themselves (like real men should!). Do the rip-off 'artists' who get away with teaching this mix of movie moves and Eastern fortune coookie philosophies really think an eight stone girl can take on a fifteen stone GAA player in a fist fight. From what I've read so far on this site all of you could use a good dose of reality and maybe a week or two of hard phyical labour to toughen you up, instead of living in/through your Jackie Chan collection.
Just a thought, and I know there will be 'violent' retorts of this statement but can anyone here match it with action????
I don't think so

p.s. I find needless violence appalling

The man has a point. Does martial arts breed overconfidence?

In most cases, yes.
Most people believe that because they have done a little martial arts that they can defend themselves from anything, and they end up dead. Most martial arts take years to master, then you kick peoples asses.

So, if you agree, why did you dismiss his statement as laughable?

Yes I am.
He claimed that martial arts is a complete waste of time. That is completly untrue. What I am saying is tht it is a waste of time only if you do a crappy 10 week course.

Yeah, I'd agree with Arthus. It can sometimes breed overconfidence in people who've only taken a brief course in it. But people who actually take it seriously are a lot more mature and generally know their own weaknesses in that respect. It takes years of training to really master it.
And to ladderbuoy.. Put my eight-anda-half stone, third level blackbelt female trainer against your fifteen stone GAA chap and he's going to have his head knocked off.

Your point is flawed from the start as these two lads are most definitely not martial artists of any standing. If these lads were proper martial artists then they would not have started the fight.
If the lads in question are training with some martial arts club they should be expelled or if not they have an atrocious instructor.

If you train with Aliveness there will be no overconfidence (nothing like being owned in a few rounds of getting owned at boxing or tapping out in jiu jitsu to shrink that ego). If you train in an image based art, (false) over confidence is generally quite prevalent.
Ladderbuoy is obvioulsy trolling and I have no doubt if someone put it up to him he would back down.

Right they couldn't have been real martial artists for 2 reasons.
If they consider themselves "hard" then they lack humility which is an essential charateristic of any martial artist.
Also they started the fight which is something a martial artist would never do because they would only ever use their art in self defense.
Therefore that story is completely irelevent.
As for martial arts causing overconfidence now thats worth discussing. But of course if you have some humility that wouldn't happen.
