Just a thought for y'all, would you use a weapon in a fight? If so, what kind would it be and why? Do you carry a weapon? If so, what?

Slashing: Stanley knife, straight razor, broken bottle.
Piercing: Screwdriver, penknife, syringe.
Blunt: Ashtray, barstool, baseball bat.
Flexible: Chain, cueball in a sock, jacket.
Thrown: Bottle, pintglass, brick.

I don't carry a weapon, but from the lists above, my inclination would be towards flexible.

The slashing and piercing weapons, while threatening in the right hands, evoke too many images of scumbags approaching you and saying "gimme your money/phone/misc item or I'll cut you/give you aids/stab you"

I think something like a chain could be used in more than one way (to strike as a direct attack, or to capture a limb or choke or some such), if you knew how to use it properly.

while i wouldn't have a clue how to use it apart from swing it around the image of me with a big metal gold chain smacking people up and down the place is rather apealing.

The main problem with flexible weaponry is that they're quite hard to get the hang of. Also, the "sweet spot" is near the end but the "haft" won't actually cause any damage if it hits your assailant. At best it'll wrap around hir arm/leg and then is turns into a tug o' war.

I'd have to say a brick. F**k it at the bastard and run!! Of course I'd still prefer to have a gun of some sort but that isn't an option.

A gun is not an option up there but I'd pick it if it's for protection, feel like a bit of a scumbag with anything else.

I was wondering when somebody was going to bring firearms into it. Here's why guns are a really (and I do mean really) stupid idea:
If I attack/defend with a stick, I can choose how badly I want to hurt my assailant, if at all. A stick can be used to lock someone, knock them out, maim tham by breaking limbs, or kill. All a gun can do is maim or kill, and even maiming isn't a sure thing; Hydrostatic shock can have someone dead from a glancing shot to the arm and good, old-fashioned system shock has been known to kill people who've only been shot in the toe with a low-calibre weapon. So the question to ask anyone carrying a gun is: Are you willing to kill as a first resort?

Hm... yeah i'm thinking a bit primitively here - I'd assume I will try to shoot the attacker in the leg or something, but most likely all aiming skills will be gone in a serious situation

Well I suppose. Then its faithful old Mr. Brick for me. It requires the least skill and f**king a brick at somebody sounds hilarious.

Here is why a gun IS a good idea -if I get into a close combat fight with someone who knows just a little about martial arts (including how to use any weapons they might be carrying) I won't stand a chance. With a good firearms - say a .50 Lightarms Barret or an SVD Dragunova I could shoot (and I'm pretty sure I could hit haviong earned a Marksmanship thingy i the "national guard") the enemy and avoid any danger to my person.
But that doesn't mean that I'll kill before trying anything else - if possible I would run away and hide. But say I was 100% sure he would come after me or my friends/family - BANG he's dead before he sees me.
In a melee situation I would probably take a quarterstaff as they are easier to use than swords/axes/chains/whatnot, it has a good reach, it can be used for blocking, and it will probably not permanently injure the opponent. But again if I was in a fight with someone who knew what he was doing I would be toast.

i like blunt objects. they take little real control, but with a bit of strength are lethal.

I realise this may be the result of reading too much fiction/seeing movies, but couldn't you at least whack someone across the head with a gun? So it's not just shooting and not necessarily killing them.

I myself would prefer slashing or blunt, though I'd say I'd have to have at least some skill with the slashing for it to be effective.

Have to go with blunt.
Using a stick for fighting has always fastinated me since I was a little kid and I used to use the garden sticks to battle my friends, much to my moms dissapproval.
I think the control needed to use it is not a skill I possess yet but hope to some day.
I think the good thing about sticks is that control. You can decide how hard to hit and where, depending on what damage you wish to do.

Blunt i.e. stick. Escrima (sp?) style, jo or bo stafff, pole cue or hefty dodder of wood. I can use it as an extention of my arm (another blunt object in essence), and I leave all of my options opened. I wouldn't carry one around but it's amazing you can pick up if you had to, bar-stool, traffic-cone (requires a little skill) and a rolled-up newspaper can be surprising effective.

The ol' guns vs. martial arts question. Most people have a adversion do merely drawing blood (I'm willing to guess slashing will come out lowest, piercing second) most think a gun as ending someone's life or not and little in between. You need to be really good or really close to hit a arm or leg, central body is much easier. From talking with people who carry guns (God Bless America) they tell me that you better have it drawn and ready, because if your surprised attacked, you have to create the time to bring it into aim.

My hands are always at the end of my arms, and if I see you reaching for what I believe to be a gun or knife, I'd be fearful for my life and can legally use any force necessary. Weapon's will only up the ante, so make sure you can use yours.

I was talking to someone only today about this. It's funny how even the most well-trained unarmed fighter loses almost everything when he gets a weapon in his hand. We recently bought some sticks for the club so I decided to give them a field test on Monday. I say this with no hint of ego, I'd put my students at least on a par with anyone else's students when it came to form and control, but on monday we all looked like simple brawlers trying to hit each other with pool cues. The problem is simple: When you're unarmed you're constantly thinking about every weapon at your disposal: hands, feet, elbows, knees, fingers, head, etc. but when you're armed the fact that you have a weapon in your hand seems to eclipse everything else about the situation, limiting your possible attacks and defences. Not only that but stances suffer too. The moral: resort to a weapon only if you really have to or if you know what to do with it.
As Sensei Peter always said to us: "Sticks are for muppets". He was talking about Nunchaku but I think it holds true for the rest. Also don't forget, maggots, it's assault if you deck him but it could be attempted murder if you use a weapon.

I am very fond of a quarter-staff, best weapon.

Although, I love katanas, will never use em, but I can day-dream, can't I?

I'm tellin ya when we actually used the canes etc on Monday I found it very hard to use. Since Im so inexperienced I felt limited in my ways to attack someone. There were the 9 basic strikes we were shown but I could think of nothing more to do and if the strike didnt hit, I felt very open to attack.
I think I hit myself once or twice too...

Can you actually use one or is this one of those bigger=bettter assumptions? Also, dream by all means, but realise that katanas are God's way of separating undertrained martial artists from their toes.
