Three weeks ago a guy in a balaclava tried to mug me on the last luas into tallaght.
I looked at him until he went away.
Two weeks ago, Some other guy, again on a very late luas, no balaclava this time walked up to me, puched me and demanded my wallet. I told him " no, now go away."
Muggers have become alot more polite these days.
[nasaal scanger accent]"Gimme you money"[/nasaal scanger accent]
"I left at home"
[nasaal scanger accent]"fair enough, can I come back to you in a week, if thats convienient, schwaa"[/nasaal scanger accent]

No, he pushed me.
But even if he punched me and I broke his arm, or leg or ribs or whatever I could still be done for assault with a deadly weapon.
I'm only justified in breaking things if they're armed with a knife or club, or baton, or something like that.
If it's a gun, then I think you're justified in doing a little more damage. Although I'm not sure.

yeah pretty much.
Not everyday that a mugger ask for your wallet and then politely walks off when you refuse.
Although next time I think I'll ask for their wallet and see how that goes.

i've got to agree. i live on the southside and last week i was waalkin home through a public park late at night.
an intimidating group of lads sat on a bench with what appeared to be dutch gold cans in hand. one of them was shouting drunkedly about beatin the shit out of some guy.
so head down, and walk straight past.
they shouted 'hello'... ah shite
and then went on to ask me how i was. and if i'd had a good day.
very odd experience.

Generally, these people are just chancers. I found that telling them 'no' worked very well in the past. Then they will simply go away.
They are working on the assumption that you are scared. Thing is, to pick these kind of situations in which to do this wisely.
Another thing to try is saying 'don't i know you from somewhere' or 'where you from'. They are so shocked they answer, and mugging someone in the middle of a conversation is very bad form. Seriously.

Yeah, I hate mugging people that I've talked to.

No, no. Seriously. It has worked for me loads of times.
For example, me and my friends were started on by this gang, and one of them says 'here, aren't you so-and-so's cousin' and then he told them all to leave us alone and we stayed chatting for a few minutes. Absolute wankers, but if you know people they won't do anything on you.
An alternative is to ask them do they want a cigarette. Its distraction.

And if you're not a person who voluntarily gives themselves cancer what do you offer them to distract them?

Depends on the person doing the mugging. Most of the time you can tell whether it is just opportunistic or not. These are the opportunistic ones i'm talking about. They're gonna assume you will be taken off-guard and by surprise, and that you'll give in to them. Only stand up to them if you think you can take them if it does come to a struggle.
Another example, me and my friend were attempt-mugged when we were 15 by two guys older than us. We just said we didn't have anything of value, and that they could have the 30p in my pocket if they wanted. We were totally derisive, though scared (and did have more money than that). They asked for my friends leather jacket, and she told them incredulously to fuck off, that her mother had given her it as a present. Then we just walked off. They didn't want a struggle, and were hoping we wouldn't give one. Like bullies, they are the kind that can't stand up to being questioned or messed with.
May not work for boys.

Oh, say you've no money or nothing on you. And no jewelery. If you can't get away safely, give them everything. But try and get away with as much of your stuff as you can!

Absolutely. Slightly off the topic of mugging, but a female friend of mine often uses, "So, how's your ma doin'? She getting on alright?" Apparently effective against drunk guys you want to get rid of.
