Okay guys, I've been trying to think up a bunch of rules about conduct and general appearance in the dojo/dojang/kwon/gym/whatever and I figured I'd just open the question to the floor. Could all of y'all give me a list of maybe five rules and lets see what we come up with. Here's my suggestion:
    1. Hygiene: All students should make sure they shower before training. Finger and to nails should be kept short and filed.
    2. Jewellery: No jewellery or watches are to be worn in training. They could easily get snagged and/or torn out in the course of training.
    3. Entering/leaving: Students should wait to be bowed in and bowed out before entering and leaving the training area.
    4. Respect: Students should endeavour to be polite and respectful to one another and their instructor at all times. Use of bad language should be discouraged at all times in class.
    5. Mobile phones, chewing gum, andanything else that could distract attention from the class should be kept out of the training area.

Just some ideas:

1. All students must refer to the trainer as 'sensei'.
2. No talking on the mats.
3. Failure to do so will result in punishment (your choice, I would suggest about 50 push ups/sit ups)

1. Talking should be kept to a minimum and if at all possible, only training related.
2. Respect your partnersability. Dont get pissed off with them just because they may not be as good as you.

Em they are more additions to what you already have but its the best I got right now.

I agree with all of that apart for No. 1. While I don't think you mean we must all have a showers directly before we step on the mats as this means turning up 15 minutes earlier. And seeing as most of the people stepping on the mats only barely turn up at 7 well then it doesnn't leave an awful lot of time.
However hygiene is important so if anyone stepping on the mats could not be mingin, or possibly a better phrased word, it would be great.

YES
I agree with this one BIG time cos I tend to feel really bad if I think the person is starting to get pissed off with me.

Well you really have two options with shite people:
1) Put them with more shite people and make them stop holding everyone else back.
or 2) Put them with the best damn person you can find(or do it yourself Smile ) and hope that they will make them better.

Its only human to get pissed of with someone, but it should be kept in moderation.

There's a difference between a person being shite and a person not having that much confidence at it as well though

That works.

People should always try. If you don't try you can never succed.

Well, when a man loves a woman.... Oh, wait, I think I'd better leave this one to your parents.

I think that someone should not get pissed off if they know that the other person is trying. Its happpened to me (someone getting pissed off at me) and I found it frustrating.

Someone who doesnt try though should not really be given the same patience by their partner.

people should ensure that they present themselves for training in a hygenic manner. suits should be laundered at least every week and if showering is not possible then please make reasonable attempts to remove body odour (i'm trying to do this seriously but its still kinda funny)

no jewellery is a good one, also if you are cut and bleeding you are not allowed to train. strains should be identified to traning partner. sleeves rolled, and body groomed, for safety.

bad language punishable with pushups. something menial to point out infraction.

post a protocol for respect, including bowing at beginning end and during class, addressing an instructor, punctuality, no shoes on mats, necessity for suits as a rule (that means you too! Wink )

people should refrain from doing other martial arts techniques during breaks, if you're bored, then hip throw someone.

you can't legislate for someone being crap. however, if they are unwilling then basic exercises like breakfalls and pushups until they try or leave.

this is a toughie, i wish ya luck!

people should do the technique that sensei has just told you to do not the one before for example.

FYI, below are the rules DCUMAC run with, taken from the website. The open-style nature of it meant people had different ways of bowing depending on the various ettiquette that they indiviually exposed to. Basically, the instructor called the shots; and being respectful (or lack thereof) rarely if ever came up.

For your safety and comfort, and that of follow participants:

[1] No jewellery, including watches, should be worn during the classes. These can cut or get snagged and do damage.

[2] To prevent injury, and possible infection, fingernails and toenails should be cut short and kept clean.

[3] Listen to and follow the instructor(s) at all times. They know their stuff, and due to the very physical nature of martial arts, not doing as instructed can lead to injury.

[4] If you have to prematurely leave the training area for any reason, please make sure the instructor knows why before you leave. This is just so the instructor knows that everything is okay.

[5] When partnered-up remember to only work to a level suitible to your partner. Its easy for a black rank to outclass a white rank, but neither will gain anything from it.

[6] All classes are conducted in bare-feet. Should anyone, for medical reasons or otherwise, require footware when training, please consult with the instructor, as some accomodations will have to be made.

[7] All sparring should be conducted in a controlled manner, with or without the wearing of padding.

[8] The wearing of a jock-strap (cup, groin guard/protector) is highly recommended for all males in all classes. Don't say we didn't warn you.

Can't really think of anything to be included that hasn't already been said - maybe some of it is more etiquette based than rules (i.e. trying, bowing, etc), although that doesn't make it any m,ore or less relevent I guess.

Having personally been scraped and (quite badly) cut by peoples nails on a few occasions, I can't agree strongly enough with hygeine points made earlier. It's really bloody painful when someone scrapes or cuts you because they haven't cut their finger or toe-nails. If you are going to be prancing about in your bare feet, then you should take care of them as well as you take care of your hands, face, or any body part that people think of as more regularly seen (i.e. using pumice to remove dead skin, keeping nails trimmed, keeping skin condition good to prevent athletes foot or other fungal infections).

No offence is intended to anyone, and I'm not speaking here with anyone in particular in mind, but it is quite unpleasent to train with someone who smells a little off colour - there's a lot of body contact during training, and it would be nice if you didn't have to force yourself to be in contact with some people.

Jewellery's an obvious one, it can cause lots of damage to you and other people if it's still on. The one that always horrified me is people training (in anything) with hoop earrings - practically asking for a torn earlobe...

I think most people who've been training for a while have an idea of when to bow, but it might be worth telling the beginners - bowing when entering/leaving the hall, bowing when stepping on/off the mats. The other thing I noticed on a few Thursday's was people stepping on and off the mats without asking permission or telling Sensei they were going. I don't think everyone knows that you're supposed to ask/tell if you need to go to the bathroom or some such, and you should wait to be asked back onto the mats when returning, instead of just wandering on. It probably only needs to be said to people once, but it's probably not something that you would think of if you hadn't been told.

Respecting other people's abilites - definitely, but only if they try and work to the highest level of their ability. There's very little more frustrating than trying to train with someone who won't punch or block properly, won't fall or throw properly, or who won't even try to remember a technique demonstrated just seconds ago by Sensei. Notice the use of the word won't, not can't. Obviously, no one can do everything the first time they train, but the only way to get better at it is to do it until you can. If it means hurling yourself at the ground a few hundred times so you can finally breakfall, so be it. If it means getting some bruises so you can finally block and punch properly, so be it.

As for trying, well I think a phrase you [m0x1e] use a lot sums it up nicely - If you're told to do something, it's not a polite request.

damn fucking right!!!

But smelly people. I cannot train with smelly people so I don't, just refuse point blank while doing my best not to offend the person in question (but any1 that knows me knows I'm incapable of this!). If some1 feels left out due to this then they can piss off (and have a shower).

Can I say that if there's a rule made for trying that it should be equal treatment towards all ie: a few weeks ago class was split and beginners working with beginners. Sensei showed something that involved a fall so one beginner decided to sit out and not take part and absolutely nothing was said. Fine if they didn't want to do the fall cos it was scary or whatever then teach them something else like Capt F. R. make them do break-falls or something else til they will do it.

Not exactly sure who you are referring to but one of the girls couldn't join in some of the throws about 2 weeks ago due to a sore back but she did explain why she couldn't do it.
