I've been watching the Olympic martial arts on telly alot lately (The Judo and Tae Kwon Do.)
I was just wondering though if that was kind of what a tournament is like

<edit to fix the title - seeing martail all the time just hurts - Kíla>

First off NO.
It was a spelling mistake should make more sense now though.

It depends on the type of tournament you're doing. If you're going to do a Tae Kwon Do or Judo tournament then yes, it would be like the tournaments you see.

It's not what the tournaments the club has been to in the last year were like though.

I've been out of WTF TaeKwonDo (the Olympic style) for a number of years, so someone can correct me if I'm wrong; but I'd say that all TKD tournements aim to be like the Olympics in terms of organisation and judging {all that hi-tec equipment and personnel and stuff), but I've always been disappointed watching the matches.

Don't get me wrong, these people on their worse day would destory me on my best, but I've seen better matchs in local tournies. There's too much stand-off and waiting. I know it's all about getting them during the "hang-time" of their kick, but rather than waiting they should be trying to force the issue with feining and faint kicks. Plus I haven't seen someone utilise a side step. which I know I was drilled into doing.

I understand what they are going through and why they fight the way they do, I guess I just expect the cream of the sport to be a count above the rest.

Can you be a little more specific? Are you talking about the olympics, in maynooth, in dublin, or what?

I totally agree. I only caught the TKD final but it was sooooo poor. I know I shouldn't expect something like the fights we see in film I always expected more grace from that level of contender. An the Kia of the American guy ...... wrecked my head!!!!!
I was sorely disappointed with the match. As crash pointed out, all the stand offs ... I mean c'mon, how many times do you need the ref to intervene to tell you to do something. Surely fighters of this calibur should be capable of being more proactive during a fight. And that's not to mention the lack of control displayed. They were practically flailing at each other except that they were doing it with their feet at head height (sp?).
Sorely disappointed

Judo and olympic Tae Kwon Do are watered down versions of actual, traditional combat arts. The reason they're so watered down is to make them safe for competitions.

Consider, if you will, what would happen if a JiuJitsu or actual Kung Fu practitioner were allowed to bring their entire repertiore to bear in a tournament environment...can anyone say UFC?As would be expected, the Ultimate Fighting Championship injury tally is always by far its most impressive statistic.

This here is a related thread on the general validity of sport martial arts, worth a gander.

Oh, and yes, the standard of martial arts at the Tae Kwon Do competition was absolutely pathetic. I had forgotten how hard it is to actually watch it.

I agree with what yee said about the Tae Kwon Do it was kinda boring watching them when they were only "bouncing up and down oppisite each other." I enjoyed watching the Judo though.... it looked cool. I was surprised at the lack of "shouting" ( as such) is the Tae Kwon Do tho cos my cousins do it and when I was watching them they "shouted" loads.

(Sorry I'm bad with these terms "Shouting"---I'm sure there's a technical word for it??)

In Korean, it's called a Kiap ... or was it Kiup ... trying to recall Korean with a dublin accent doesn't make it easy.

I Japanese arts it's called a kiai, and this seems to be the term you hear most often.
