kata is a type of toasted bun, usually served to important guests.
kumite is a topic of conversation forbidden by mandarin law, circa 800a.d. (forgive the anachronistic use of dating here), but still used to indicate what we would call a faux pas.
no thanks necessary...

kata is a practice where you fight in sequence multiple invisible opponents. Its about form, and accuracy, as well as style etc.

I reckon kumite is another term for actual combat though I may be wrong, twas not a word commonly used when I trained. *god I'm gettin auld*
But in a kata competition its all bout pulling off the moves as flawlessly as you can in sequence.

Kata are forms that you learn off - a sequence or routine of movements. They can be performed by yourself, in a group, and with or without weapons.
Kumite is the fighting/sparring part of the tournament, usually light contact, divided into continuous and points sparring. The major difference there is that with points sparring, every time someone scores a point (or something similar happens) the ref will call a stop. You'll return to your starting point, and he (and whoever else is overseeing) will make a call and award a point to either side. With continuous, the fight doesn't stop. Points are kept track of, and the winner decided by a comparison at the end.
Kumite is also divided a number of other ways, the most obvious being a male/female divide. Then, depending on who's running the tournament and how many enter, you may be divided by level (junior/senior), vague belt system, weight, or anything else they can come up with.
Good luck, have fun, and don't drop your guard!

the most important thing about kata is technique and ability to do various attacks/blocks while making them look sharp and focussed, a lot of things a taken into account like stance and posture.
The karate union of australia has a pretty good site, here's the link to the kata page:

as previous posters have said, kata=predefined movements scored on technique strength etc. Kumite is fighting, a japanese word.
Kumite is the be and end all, the alpha and omega of my life.
