There's a rake-load of different karate styles. The Green Dragon in Sligo practice a style derived from Wado Ryu karate and heavily influenced by a particular style of Kung Fu. The creators of Green Dragon karate felt that traditional wado ryu was too limited in its range of movement and so adopted kung fu stances and footwork while not losing the blistering speed and linear precision of the karate handwork. It's a bit of an oversimplification but it's basically a fighting style based on the theory that, if you hit him first then he won't get a chance to hit you and if he hits you first then you should be able to evade the attack rather than resort to hard blocking techniques.

karate styles that spring to mind are: shotokan, wado ryu, kyokushinkai, shorinji kempo, kenpo, shotokai, and a whole load more. There's a myth that there is a style of karate for each village in okinawa, which is a complete lie because people wander off and pioneer new styles every year so it would probably be more correct (if infinitely cheesier) to say there's as many karate styles as there are karate stylists.

That's a tough question to answer. I'd be inclined to say yes but that's just because I don't really like hard blocking and prefer soft blocks, redirections, and evasions but other stylists would be able to argue very convincingly in favour of hard blocks; We've all seen Shotokan practitioners break baseball bats with forearm blocks, after all.

Well, I went. I didn't stay because they were doing grading but they said I could come on Wednsday 8:30 - 10:00. The only real comment they made was "13!? Jesus Christ!". Cool I think I made an impression.

<shrug>
you'll go if you want to go. I'd advise minimal pissing around between making the commitment and fulfilling it as leaving it longer just makes things harder.
