You could also use him as a wingchun dummy, you know jackie chan style, block the poke in the eye, and counter as you see fit...

just remember the penitent man kneels before god Wink

maybe that's the reason they make us kneel before class... Wink

I'd have to thank god http://www.mikadosoc.ie/forum/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=828 for opening my eyes to this one HA!

Snippets from the Christian Martial Arts Network http://www.agapy.com/cma/ -:

I agree with the following wholeheartedly, being a recovering catholic and all.
Quote:
It is true that the martial arts was invented and developed in the Far East. However, the martial arts is not cultural, not religious, and not philosophical in and of itself; it reflects the values and principles of its teachers, which can be Christian or any other religion.

But here's when it gets sticky:
Quote:
There are two ways that Christians can justifiably be involved in the martial arts. The most popular way is by removing traditional Eastern religious concepts that may be attached and practicing the physical techniques as a form of exercise or sport. The Christian way is more challenging; it requires replacing traditional Eastern religious concepts with Christian ones. In this way, the martial arts becomes more than an exercise or sport, it becomes a tool for growth and development in the Christian faith and life.

Is martial arts supposed to teach religion? Yes I know you not supposed to talk about politics, religion, abortion, gun control or other sticking points ... but sometimes it's just fun. Twisted Evil

Umm, I think that if you want to buy into the more "religious" aspects of some martial arts then its a personal choice really. You can just go through the motions of bowing, meditation and such without really believing the premise behind them, or without gaining anything from them.

I think that some martial arts benefit greatly from the more spiritual aspects of their form, the shaoulin monks being a good example. But I don't know if martial arts set out directly to teach religion. I think those who develop the more spiritual side of things are people who actively want to, and go off and research it by themselves.

That said, I don't like the idea that, in order to be a Christian martial artist, you must replace traditional Eastern religious concepts with Christian ones. To me that seems very disrespectful of what, in some cases, is thousands of years of belief in a system/way. I'm not saying you should buy into whatever spiritual side your martial art will throw at you, but you should at the very least respect it. In some cases, people died for respecting it and practising it, just so that people like us could still practice it years later. And I think to just replace their belief system with your own, without a second thought, is disrespectful.

Anyway, that's my two cents, as muddled as it is...

I certainly don't think one needs to replace Eastern philosophies with Christian ones. Some of the ideas inherent in martial arts can complement a Christian life. They certainly don't have to be in conflict.

Of course, many Eastern religions disagree with Christianity on several points, and one can't or shouldn't believe two explicity and absolutely contradictory "truths". But such issues rarely enter into the practice of martial arts. In my experience, they never have.
