Hello,
I'm Ted a transfer student from Augsburg College in the US. I'll be attending Maynooth for the year.
I saw that the Self Defence club works Ju-jistu. Do they or any other groups train in ground work or Brazilian JJ?
I have been involved in Grappling style art's for a few years and am just coming off a back injury.
Regardless of the style's I am hoping to train to try and get some fitness back while I'm there.
Thank you.

Hiya. Welcome to Ireland.
What experience do you have in what styles/systems/arts? Our website's www.maynoothselfdefence.com if you'd like a look. We don't do BJJ as a rule but we'd be chuffed to swap some tricks if you join up, not being naive enough to dismiss a style with such a proven record, regardless of newness.
Groundwork is a regular fixture in our senior classes and we occasionally dip beginners into it too when time (and syllabus!) allow it.

Thanks for the welcome m0x1e. I checked out the selfdefence website a while ago. Good stuff.
I've been dabbling since I was 8, started with Judo, but after 5 years of amateur wrestling in high school I entered the Marines and qualified as close combat instructor. It sounds more impressive than it was, but it did introduce me to aspects of combat grappling. I trained with other instructors and picked a little. I competed in some early MMA-light type stuff where I learned that I had a lot to learn. I attended some basic BJJ classes for 2 years in New Orleans then when I moved back to Minnesota a close0se friend introduced my to Mr. Dave Arnebeck and the Warriors Cove. It was the first true cross training I had done in an orginized environment. They trained in Rickson Gracie BJJ, striking etc. I've included the website that you can best judge for yourself. He and his instructors were great envoy's for martial art's as well as being excellent teacher's.

I trained with them a little over a year then, do to a back injury and school, I was not able to attend.
I enjoy doing groundwork, comfort maybe, but I also look forward to learning other art's and

Hi Ted,
It's not in Maynooth, but if you're ever down to Dublin, the best BJJ guy in Ireland (brown belt and European champion) is John Kavanagh. He runs Straight Blast Gym in Harold's Cross.
http://www.sbgireland.com/
Former multiple time Irish Judo champion Andy Ryan also runs a club on the North side of the city, in Finglas - he teaches BJJ too.
There are a growing number of BJJ/MMA clubs around the country, all of them are completely cool about people popping in for a roll. The best places to ask are on the two forums at the bottom of this post.
The first Irish BJJ Open will be on in October in Dublin (I think it's the 22nd).
Also in terms of MMA we have an Irish amatuer league http://www.mmaleague.com/ as well as other pro shows such as Ring of Truth, Extreme Combat, Cage Wars, Ultimate Fight night etc. (most of which are in Dublin or Belfast).
The details for most of these events (whether you want to compete or just watch) are usually posted on
http://p201.ezboard.com/birishmartialartscommunity
and the self defence/martial arts section of http://www.boards.ie/
Enjoy Maynooth, hope to see you around.
