At about 9 tonight I was waiting for the bus at the bus stop beside the statoil on the keys, and 4 pissed guys started making fools of themselves.

Course lucky me, one of them chooses me to get aggressive with, he comes over and grabs my jacket.

Now I know how to get out of that situation, not that difficult... on the mats. Because I don't have to actually have to hit someone.

But when it came to it, I did nothing, I stood there being very afraid.
A couple of seconds later he friends tried to pull him off and eventually succeeded when their bus came.

What should I have done?

One of the problems is that using the stuff you've learnt is sposed to be as a last resort, But it's very difficult to tell when exactly the last resort is before something nasty happens, barring excellent reflexes.

What you did was the right move, specially as there were three other friends of his nearby. Imo.

Agree with Maximillian's points there. It certainly wasn't time for a last resort, as you had no idea what was going to happen. Standing and doing nothing prevented further provocation of the drunk asshole, whereas if you had flattened him, you would have just made the situation erupt.

I would have tried to back away and get his hand off me in a non-threatening manner. When it four against one you don't want to get into a fight with all of them.

Then again, if his friends hadn't decided to try to pull him off, it could have turned out differently. At what point do you reckon you would try to defend yourself.
At what point is some being aggressive enough for hurting them to be the safest option

Your basic goal is to not get hurt. I agree with Raptor, if he took a swing, take him out and get the hell out of there. If the bunch were inebriated, you'd probably be able to outdistance them without too much hassle.

As for when to fight back, you'd have to ask someone else. I have no idea how I'd deal with that situation, and I hope I never have to find out.

My money is on the latter, that you froze, and you shouldn't worry about that. If that was your first encounter like that then a lot of people freeze due to the new experience of crazy amounts of adrenaline being dumped all at once. So step 1 - don't beat yourself up over doing something that 90% of people do in the same situation. Just use positive affirmation like telling yourself "next time I will react" and don't dwell anymore on it.

).The only way wou will get better is with practice....and lets face it...nobody wants to practice so theres no point really about talking about it
