I'd just like to be the first to welcome the DCU Martial Arts Club to Mikado and formally extend an invitation to them to come down and train with us.

Yup, welcome to the boards guys. We're generally a pretty friendly lot, so any questions - pm one of us or stick them up on one of the boards (even if they're not in any way related to martial arts <grin>), and someone's bound to be able to answer it!
Enjoy your stay, hope to see you in training soon.

Just a quick question for you guys out there: what exactly is matsamuro-seito (sp?) any chance of a quick write up to explain it to those of us who think Self-Defence is a perfectly legitimate description for a martial art style? <Embarassed Shrug>
Oh yeah, also, what's the average standard of DCUMAC students (good/medium/bad) in the following categories?
Striking, Locking, Throwing, Breakfalls, Groundfighting.
I'd just like to know so that i can pitch a class properly when y'all (hopefully) take us up on our invite.

|
|
Ok where to begin... *deep breath* First off let me say I have been training with mick for the past 2 and a half years, mostly in DCUMAC, where "Self Defence" was the martial art taught... Only recently have I started learning "Matsumura Seito" in the old school way (formally kata waza), and even then, Mick was more running us through technicalities of movements rather than meanings of kata (forms).
Interpretation of these forms and their meanings are mostly what Seito is about, so far anyway...
A good forum to check out is at http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/~crashaid
Literally I think "Matsumura" was some guy back in the day, as was "Seito", "shorin", I think is derived from shoalin (like the kung fu) "ryu" means "the way", "Koeppel" is the grandmaster of the style, and karate do is karate do, so the long title is:
Matsumura Seito Shorin ryu Koeppel-ha karate do...
Interpretations I think come in three stages:
Beginning level, what children are taught, what westerners were shown way back when (like Shotokan) a "low block followed by punch" is you blocking a front kick and punching the other person
Then you get grappling liek interpretations, so that when you do techniques against someone, all of a sudden you end up with someone's head between your hands ready to do what you will to their neck with a "low block" (hint: twist not hit)
Next are advanced techniques, kyusho jutsu, pressure point attacks, extremely interesting when you get to use them, but they can be extremely hard to get at except when you know exactly what you are doing...
The kata of Seito contain different movements which show which sets of pressure points can be used to cause a bad response (as opposed to good healing response from acupuncturists) I think you have to be quite high up the food chain of kyusho justu to know how to make these work properly...

That is a tough one, it depends on who comes out. The beginners who might be out will have basic striking and locking, older members will have good striking and locking, and there's some of us who groundfight on a regular basis, throwing and breakfalls won't be the best from anyone I think, except maybe for one or two...
Hope this helps...

Either we made a good impression when you came out to the competition or you're just plain nice ..... Or you got hit just a little too hard
Thanks for the welcome, it's like home already. I hope you guys will like having us around aswell.
As for the Seito question I think that was quite adaquetly explained. I'll add my own take on it though <grin>.
As I understand the style it is intended for those who either can't, physically, do all the techniques from a more regular style like Tae Kwon Do or who are more intent on self defense for the street.
Techniques are usually performed from a 'walking' stance ie. you take a forward step as if you were walking down the street and you are in a fighting stance. It's a practical style which deals a lot with close quarter encounters which gives it that 'street' style.
The standard of the DCUMAC members is a bit varied. This year we have a lot of beginners where the MAC is there first contact with Martial Arts but some of the members have come back from the last few years having taken up styles outside of the club. So in the different categories we have,
Striking - medium to good
Locking - I'd say medium to good as the beginners havn't had much experience in this but our Monday class is all about it.
Throwing - Bad .... We hardly ever go into this kind of defense
Breakfalls - as we don't go into throwing much we don't do much breakfalls so I guess Bad.
Groundfighting - Good for the Monday class but pretty bad for the other Tuesday and Wednesday classes.
It's getting late and I've an assignment due tomorrow I gotta go to bed!
All the Best everyone.

In your Sensei's (I'm not gonna mention his name because I hope to coax the bastard onto these boards <Wink>) own words; sometimee you'll know someone all your life and never be more than acquaintances but sometimes you'll know someone only a short period of time and become close friends; he and I were of the second category. Not only do I have immense respect for him as an actual technical combatant but I think his attitudes on inter-club cooperation and sportsmanship are something for us all to aspire to. I met up with him for a coffee on the day before he left for the states and promised him that I'd do my absolute level best to close the gap between our two clubs that bullshit politics has created, hence us arriving and acting like we knew you all, I guess.
Completely aside from all that, you guys made an excellent impression and I can quite categorically say I don't think I've ever felt a freindlier environment at a tournament. Here's hoping this year won't be the last!

Who likes politics anyway!
The plan is that it'll happen next year and to that end I'm gonna have to go prepare a bit of a document on what has to be done to get it organised.
Why do I keep making more work for myself!?!?!

What did I say about calling me Sensei
Well you coaxed me here, and I must say I am impressed with the explainations of Seito that you have been given. I personally like to think Seito as a way of thinking about how martial arts is taught, practiced and developed. I'm honestly not sure if that's because of the system, or more because of my Sensei.
It's a karate system that advicates-:
* intelliegence and understanding from its practioners (you must know what you're doing or it's worthless)
* practicallity (everything has a real application, and you can utilise it for the rest of you life)
* effectiveness (no wasted motion, gain control and/or end any assault)
and above all else
* APPLICATION (martial arts was designed to be used on the streets)
But I am a little pro-biased about all of that.

Yowza!
Is it me or did it just get a LOT more crowded at the top? <Smile>
I'll stop calling you Sensei when you stop outranking me. Welcome to our boards. For the record, people you will have met from seminar/class you taught down here are: Razz, Ragdoll, Saoili, Estelindis, Thurifuge, Kila, and Death Cherub. Asmo's a recent addition but, like the rest of us, can talk a great fight with the best of 'em. <Grin>
I'll let one of the others give you a rundown on what I teach and how because at least that way some small pretence of humility is maintained by me. <Wink>

Well I have nothing better to do so I might as well give a run down of how a class would go out here.
1- Stretching.
This is the usual streches, all legs and arms and back and stuff. Will just say now, damn bridging.
2-Ukemi(rolls etc)
This is where we go over all breakfalls (front, back, two sides, twisting, wheel) and do the different types of rolls(shoulder, front, back, side, possibly straight jackets)
3-Punches/blocks & kicks
Do blocks such as S-block and double blocks and then do back and front roundhouse kicks and side kicks.
4-General techniques
We do basics like hip throws, shoulder throws, body drops etc. We all sometimes do more advanced stuff like stomach throws, valley drops or general take downs using circular motions. From time to time Moxie will come up with something inventive and we will try it. Syllabus is done from time to time...
5-Pushing hands
Excercise to improve sensitivity by slow motions, keeping contact with your partner and trying to get it strikes etc but without forcing it too much. I'm never good at describing this part...
6-Conditioning
Excercises to toughen up forearms with a heavy cubinate song accompaniment.
7-Ground fighting
Few minutes where we pair up and fight until two points have been scored. Points are locks until tap out, no punches and no finger locks.
So thats it overall. We sometimes spar too which is fun.
Basically the class is self defence so its all practical application techniques
Hope I covered everything there!

The DCUMAC have their own board, called CrashAid, which some of you may want to check out. It's been active a lot longer than our board here and so has more scope to it. If nothing else, would the DCU crew mind transplanting some of the more interesting stuff over this way?

Let me set the record straight, I am CrashAid; I just happen to get mixed-up with my forum, a lot. Can't say I see the resemblence, but I do note the ambiguity.
Use what you want from it Mox, I made the forum as a reference for martial artist. Any facts (??) or ideas can be used, but direct quotes need permission of their authors. Any doubts, just pm me.
