| Im not a member of the "self defence club" but I'll tell ya anyways. As people might know (or not) Im a kickboxer but I've also trained in kenpo based self defense and dabbled (i mean dabbled) in grapping. I hope after my fights in feb and march that I can do grapping and thai boxing. I've been asking around and SBG or Bridgestone seem to be the best.

I teach Taekwondo Mon and Wed and Thur, Thur being Semi Contact Sparring oriented, but I wouldn't consider that training for myself.
I do BJJ on Monday Tuesday and Thursday, Sunday (and Saturdays if a fight is coming up) I train MMA or Greco Roman wrestling. What I do each week tends to vary based on what my focus is, at the moment (as you can probably tell ) I am trying to better my BJJ (grappling), but if I was working on my stand up I would replace Saturday and Tuesday with some Thai training.

| I am affiliated to SBG and they are far and away the best MMA gym in Ireland. Whenever we fight in Belfast there is a gulf in skill between SBG guys and the rest.

I do Self Defence and Aikido (although poxy C&S council meeting mean I miss it every now and again). Last year I did sport karate, and as soon as I can make the training times this year (probably post-christmas) I'll start with that again.
Occasionally we cross train with other clubs, and learn from other styles as a club too. (eg DCU earlier this year).
Self Defence is the main one for me though.

Yes, John is Irish Regional Director. He is a full time proffessional instructor in Harold's Cross.

Ok, sorry <hangs head>
I must say though, I much prefer C&S council this year. It's run quicker and more efficiently, and isn't let get out of control and turn into a jungle like it was last year. It's really impressive. Honest.

In answer to the main question, yes Mark, "Self-Defence" is pretty much all we'll ever need...the other martial arts we train in are just so that we can strike dramatic poses in between Self-Defence Kamehameha Waves.
<Cheeky Grin>
Seriously, though, I'm a big fan of cross-training but only if it's all used to supplement one core style. Your Delivery System article pretty much sums up my way of thinking on it.

Cool! Any word on training times/class fees/etc?

So it trains against a fully resisting opponent in all three ranges? Class....

Not part of the NUIM-SD but was a member of DCU Martial Arts Club which is founded on the idea of bring together people from different arts to cross-train; as well as bringing guest instructors and having as many classes by the resident instructors as possible. Glad to say our previous cross-training has included Maynooth's own Self-Defence club and Sports Karate Club.

That would explain a lot I have to agree with the supplementastion of a core style. Begineers can get too much diverse information too quickly. It's better to have a ground in one particular art - even if that art is uniquely your own.
| mark.leonard wrote: | | So it trains against a fully resisting opponent in all three ranges? | I'm curious, other arts I'm come across refer to 4 ranges: Leg, arm, trapping/clich, ground; how do you classify them?
