Not essential, but it helps a hell of a lot. Unless you put too much on yourself and in later years it'll all come back to haunt ya.

I'd say it's a good thing.
A little toughening up is doesn't do anyone any harm!

| Do you mean body conditioning like getting used to taking leg kicks or cardio training?

I wouldn't say it's essential but a certain degree of it is extremely useful and can save you a lot of pain. We tend to do very light conditioning of most of the body but condition our arms quite a lot, the logic being that arms are used to block incoming attacks so they'd best be as tough as possible.
It's important to be aware of the downside of conditioning too; premanent damage. This is why Thai boxers tend not to live too long after the age of forty, and I think we can all agree that Muai Thai has the best overall conditioning regimen of any style out there.

| I say it isn't essential - it's all down to how much do yoyu wnat to put into your training, vs. what you want to get out. I've been told I should do regular maki-wara work, but I don't want to permanently deform my hands and wrists. I know theres a lot of plus to be gained (stronger bones, ability to take a knock) but the deadening of nerves (beyond what happens during normal training) is not something I think is required.
